Meeting Notes
October 13, 2003 at the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County

Present: Sherrie Antonowicz, Russ Bailey, Phil Blank, Jeanne Crisp, Dave Ferguson, Julie Goyette, Michele Hayslett, Susan Herzog, Jeri Oltman, Mark Pumphrey, Lisa Roberts, Linda Stone, and Carol Tobin. Martin House, a member of the PLCMC reference staff, attended to assist with the 24/7 demonstration and Jeff Pomerantz attended to solicit feedback on evaluation issues.

The committee began with discussion of how present committee members hope to continue participation. Lisa Roberts reported on the NCLA session. Phil Blank exhibited variations on the most popular logo for the NCknows web site and accepted suggestions for further revisions. The realization that the NCLIVE logo is changing and using the same wording for a tag line led to the decision that Phil will talk with NC LIVE staff to try to gain some insight for our design efforts.

Jeff Pomerantz led discussion of the evaluation effort beginning with a statement of the overarching research question to be addressed: is this an effective service? Detailed debate of various questions ensued. Conclusion was that Jeff is heading in the right direction and will bring a second draft to the next meeting.

Martin House led a demonstration of the 24/7 software. Major points were that it is relatively easy to learn with a little practice, that many pieces are customizable and that before we can frame issues for training the committee must become more familiar with it. To that end, several goals were established for completion prior to the next meeting:

1. Phil will work with 24/7 to set up test queue(s)—practice queue(s) and a meeting queue

- goal is that everyone will participate in at least one e-meeting in the next month

2. To use the librarian side, we need to follow technical specifications - Phil will send them out and assist onsite if necessary

3. Pair up to use the software, while on the phone with each other. Use the listserv to find practice partners.

4. Phil will send an "assignment" to practice with. Goal is for everyone on AC to complete the assignment by 11/24

5. Scheduling software - Phil will learn about it

6. Practice communicating outside the reference software (IPSwitch from 24/7)

7. Read transcripts - Phil will provide with annotations to distinguish scripts from extemporaneous typing

8. Investigate - How will canned scripts work? Possible to personalize? If yes, to what level? Library? Individual? Was the training CD useful?

The next meeting will be held November 24th in Chapel Hill.
